Infrasonic and Ultrasonic Noise From Wind Turbines

Wind power or wind energy is a form of renewable energy that harnesses the power of the wind to generate electricity. It involves using wind turbines to convert the turning motion of blades, pushed by moving air (kinetic 1 energy) into electrical energy (electricity). This requires certain technologies, such as a generator that sits at the top of a tower, behind the blades, in the head (nacelle) of a wind turbine. Source: US Department of Energy

Electricity from wind turbines moves from the generator through internal tower cables, steps up voltage via transformers, flows through regional collection lines to a substation.

High-voltage cables, heavy-duty electrical conductors, transport the current from the wind farm substation straight into the regional power grid. 2

At their lowest point (maximum thermal sag), high-voltage transmission cables typically maintain a minimum ground clearance between 5.2 meters (17 feet) and 9 meters (30 feet). Discussion and conclusions

The key to understanding the phenomenology of infrasound lies in its extremely large wavelengths and its extremely low attenuation over very long distances. A significant portion of the infrasound from wind turbines can be measured in nearby residences, with dominant infrasound episodes at the BPF 4. While the level of infrasound is below the threshold of hearing, some residents become sensitized either to the infrasound vibration through floors and beds or to higher frequency, audible sound in the structure, caused by resonance. When this happens, they suffer the symptoms of chronic stress. The autonomous nervous system is involved in much the same way as it is for other phobias [Note by Admin 5] .

There is no suggestion that the solution to infrasound sensitivity is to remove all sources of infrasound from the built environment – this is as ludicrous as suggesting the elimination of all spiders to solve arachnophobia 6, or all small spaces to solve claustrophobia 7 . Wind turbines provide a valuable source of renewable energy 8, 9 and are likely to become more prevalent in the future.

This work has explained infrasound behaviour and its effect on people. Future research is needed to determine which frequencies of wind turbine sound signatures are most annoying to nearby residents and whether these can be eliminated through better design of the blades. Solid house construction using concrete and brick, is likely to have less active coupling with infrasound and will therefore generate fewer resonant frequencies, but this is hardly a solution for those who are currently suffering a very real problem.

Boretti, Ordys and Al Zubaidy (2018) suggest that active infrasound cancellation (anti-sound by playing the same sound waves out of phase to cancel them) might be an effective remediation. However, this seems impractical as it is very difficult to create infrasound within an entire structure. A sensible and inexpensive solution would be to monitor problematic houses with sound equipment and accelerometers 10 to measure audible noise and inaudible vibration. This would detect low frequency tympanic vibration of floors. Remediation would involve installing bracing to eliminate the annoying vibrations. Weckendorf et al. (2016) review the bracing design approaches used for damping vibrations 11 in timber floors. Ground floors are easier to brace than upper floors. If an upper floor problem is identified, the bed could be moved to an area where the floor vibrates less. This remediation might be done by the owners of wind turbine farms and would probably be an inexpensive but rewarding public relations exercise.

In order to become more sustainable, there is a global effort to increase the use of renewable energy sources 12, such as wind.

Therefore, wind turbine installations will increase in the future and more residents will be exposed to this source of persistent infrasound. The debate on whether or not the infrasound poses significant health risks to residents has reached an impasse. By addressing the needs of nearby residents, future research can move in a more constructive direction, which will improve the perceptions of wind turbines and ultimately benefit their uptake.


Noise sensitivity

Noise sensitivity is a core feature of both ADHD and autism 13 driven by shared challenges with sensory filtering in the brain. However, autism more frequently involves intense or painful auditory hypersensitivity, while ADHD noise sensitivity often centers on distraction and mental exhaustion. Because 50% to 70% of autistic individuals also have ADHD, these traits frequently overlap. Source

[Added by Admin] ADHD is one of the many biological effects14, 15 of electromagnetic radiation. In epidemiological studies about the impact of wind turbines on the wellbeing of human beings and animals, the electromagnetic radiation levels in the same area should be investigated, next to the electromagnetic radiation levels inside the buildings of those who live near or very near to wind turbines.

The combination of electromagnetic fields noise (E noise16) with infrasonic and ultrasonic noise pollution from wind turbines, plus the impact of too high electromagnetic radiation levels, is a not existing research field /epidemiological study in science, and has therefore to be created as soon as possible, since electromagnetic fields in buildings, both private and public buildings, are linked to the unscientific ICNIRP 17 standards of safety, while biological effects already occur at much lower levels than the ICNIRP safety levels 18. Governments and national health care institutions, world wide, have implemented the unscientific 19 ICNIRP standards, which means that we all live in utterly unsafe because aggressive electromagnetic radiation.

    Since infrasonic and ultrasonic noise waves have been hardly investigated, and since the most of those who study these phenomenons do not sense themselves what they research, they do not really understand the difference between phobia and anxiety.

    There is a difference between infrasounds and ultrasounds: Website Audiocardio
    Infrasound is a low-frequency audible sound that is oftentimes below 20 Hz. Infrasounds can be caused by various sources, such as winds, storms, earthquakes, volcanoes, and even wind turbines. Moreover, some animals, like elephants, even communicate with one another through infrasound since low-frequency sounds travel faster than high-frequency sounds. 
    Also, studies have suggested animals can perceive infrasound before a natural disaster occurs. Animals fled coastal areas hours before the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 leading researchers to believe that it was due to infrasound.

    Ultrasound is a high-frequency inaudible sound that is usually above 20,000 Hz and has very short wavelengths. It’s not often that we find ultrasounds in nature unless it is created by creatures like birds, bats, and dolphins. 
    Ultrasound is typically used for medical purposes to repair damaged muscles, treat inoperable tumors, or scan a human fetus. It can also be used for industrial purposes such as helping in the process of cleaning or speeding chemical reactions. Ultrasound can be used in the process of cleaning jewelry, optical lenses, dental and surgical instruments, and some industrial parts.
