“We’re facing a water emergency in Catalunya because of climate change – for farmers in particular” Mr Narcís Geli Pagès, farmer in Spain
Our founder Willem Ferwerda spoke to Mr Narcís Geli Pagès at his farm in Espolla, Catalunya late last year. He explained to Willem how much the landscape around his farm has changed since he was born 80 years ago. Streams that once flowed freely are now nothing but dusty pathways; vineyards and olive groves are dying due to lack of water.
Average annual rainfall has more than halved in this region. And Catalunya is not alone – they’ve made headlines declaring a drought emergency in recent months, but many other European landscapes are now desperately dry due to land degradation and climate change.
More than any other sector, agriculture is most affected by climate change – and, at the same time, one of the biggest contributors to it. We urgently need to transition to more regenerative, sustainable agricultural practices in Spain and beyond to both mitigate and adapt to global warming.
This issue is particularly relevant as we start the EU Green Week, highlighting the importance of initiatives for water resilience 📣 We must restore the world’s landscapes now! 📣
